What Are Embroidered Patches
The Original — Still the Best
Embroidered patches are the most recognized and widely used patch type in the world. They use thick polyester or rayon thread stitched onto a twill or felt backing to create bold, colorful designs that stand out on any garment.
Unlike woven patches which use thin threads for fine detail, embroidered patches use thicker thread that gives designs a rich, textured, three-dimensional quality. The stitching is durable, colorfast, and resistant to fading — making embroidered patches ideal for uniforms, workwear, and promotional merchandise that needs to look good wash after wash.
At EmbPunch, every embroidered patch starts with our in-house embroidery digitizing team creating a production-ready stitch file before a single thread is sewn. This means your patch comes out exactly as designed — clean edges, accurate colors, and consistent results across your entire order.

Coverage refers to how much of the patch surface is covered in embroidery thread. 50% coverage leaves the twill backing visible in background areas, giving a lighter look. 75% is the most popular — good coverage with moderate cost. 100% means the entire patch surface is embroidered with no backing visible — the richest look but higher stitch count.
A merrow border is a looped thread border sewn around the edge of the patch — it gives a classic, rounded, slightly raised edge. A heat-cut (die-cut) border cuts the patch to its exact shape with a laser — ideal for custom shapes where a merrow border wouldn't work. Most standard shapes use merrow; complex or custom shapes use die-cut.
There is no hard limit on thread colors. Standard embroidered patches typically use 2–8 colors. More colors increase complexity and cost slightly. We carry thousands of thread colors and can match most Pantone references accurately.
