What Are Bullion Patches

The Art of Metallic Wire Embroidery

Bullion patches are among the most prestigious forms of embroidered insignia in the world. Unlike standard embroidered patches that use polyester or rayon thread, bullion patches are crafted using fine gold and silver metallic wire coiled tightly to create a three-dimensional, textured surface that catches the light beautifully.

The technique has its roots in military tradition — officers' epaulettes, regimental badges, and ceremonial insignia have used bullion wire embroidery for centuries. Today, bullion patches are used by private clubs, luxury apparel brands, military and law enforcement organizations, and anyone who wants their patch to make a statement of quality and prestige.

At EmbPunch, our bullion patches are crafted using a combination of metallic wire, velvet backing, and supporting materials that give each patch its distinctive raised, rich appearance. The wire can be used for lettering, border trims, fill patterns, and intricate design elements — all finished with meticulous hand craftsmanship.

Standard embroidered patches use polyester or rayon thread stitched flat onto a backing. Bullion patches use coiled metallic wire (gold or silver) that creates a raised, three-dimensional surface with a distinctive sheen. Bullion patches are more prestigious, more durable, and significantly more expensive to produce.

Properly made bullion patches are extremely durable — the metallic wire maintains its shape and lustre for many years. Unlike standard embroidered patches, bullion wire doesn't fray or lose color. They can be carefully hand-washed but should not be machine washed.

Bullion patches can be made with iron-on (free), sew-on (free), peel and stick, or velcro backing. For heavy bullion patches, we recommend sew-on backing for the most secure attachment given the additional weight of the metallic wire.
